Constructing thin groups

چکیده
Let G be a semisimple Lie group and <G a lattice. Following Sarnak [25], a subgroup of is called thin if has infinite index in , but is Zariski dense. Since it is straightforward to exhibit free subgroups of lattices that are Zariski dense, we shall, in addition insist that a thin group is finitely generated and does not decompose as a free product. There has been a good deal of interest recently in thin groups. This has been motivated in part by work on expanders, and in particular the so-called affine sieve of Bourgain, Gamburd and Sarnak [5]. Other recent work that study thin groups can be found in [13; 14; 15]. We also refer the reader to other papers in this volume. The aim of this article is to summarize work in [22; 20; 21], as well as discussing some other results regarding (sometimes conjectural) constructions of thin subgroups in lattices. We begin by outlining our strategy for generating some thin subgroups. We do this first in broad terms, and then specialize to some cases that we describe in more detail. In the remainder of this section, will denote a Fuchsian group (i.e., a discrete subgroup of PSL.2;R/) or a Kleinian group (i.e., a discrete subgroup of PSL.2;C/) of finite covolume, and G a semisimple Lie group not locally isomorphic to PSL.2;R/ or PSL.2;C/. Thin Coverings of Modules
Thin coverings are a method of constructing graded-simple modules from simple (ungraded) modules. After a general discussion, we classify the thin coverings of (quasifinite) simple modules over associative algebras graded by finite abelian groups. The classification uses the representation theory of cyclotomic quantum tori. We close with an application to representations of multiloop Lie algebras.
متن کاملNEW METHODS FOR CONSTRUCTING GENERALIZED GROUPS, TOPOLOGICAL GENERALIZED GROUPS, AND TOP SPACES
The purpose of this paper is to introduce new methods for constructing generalized groups, generalized topological groups and top spaces. We study some properties of these structures and present some relative concrete examples. Moreover, we obtain generalized groups by using of Hilbert spaces and tangent spaces of Lie groups, separately.
متن کاملConstructing thin subgroups commensurable with the figure-eight knot group
In this paper we find infinitely many lattices in SL(4,R) each of which contains thin subgroups commensurable with the figure-eight knot group.
متن کاملComputing Subgroups Invariant Under a Set of Automorphisms
When examining the structure of a finite group G, a typical question is the determination of the conjugacy classes of subgroups. For this problem a well-known algorithm – the cyclic extension method (Neubüser 1960, Mnich 1992) – has been in use for over 30 years. For practical purposes this algorithm is limited to groups of size a few thousand. If the subgroup lattice is very thin the possible ...
متن کاملMultiple Classifiers for Electronic Nose Data
In this contribution we apply a method -called boostingfor constructing a classifier out of a set of (base or weak) classifiers for the discrimination of two groups of coffees (blends and monovarieties). The main idea of boosting is to produce a sequence of base classifiers that progressively concentrate on the hard patterns, i.e. those which are near to the classification boundary. Measurement...
